Threads is a new messenger app developed by Instagram
It offers a separate space for real-time updates and public conversations through text.
The goal is to extend Instagram's photo and video sharing capabilities into a text-based platform.
Users can follow and connect with friends and creators, just like on Instagram.
Threads uses the same suite of safety and user controls as Instagram.
Users can log in with their existing Instagram account, and the verification will carry over.
The profile for Threads can be customized, different from the Instagram profile.
Users under 16 (or under 18 in some countries) will have their profiles defaulted to private upon joining.
The app has accessibility features, such as screen reader support and AI-generated image descriptions.

Users can control who can mention them or reply to them and filter out replies containing specific words.
Instagram's Community Guidelines will apply on Threads, and there's a commitment to safety and user protection.
There are plans to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub, the open social networking protocol. This would allow Threads to interoperate with other apps supporting the same protocol, like Mastodon and WordPress.
This compatibility will give users the option to stop using Threads and transfer their content to another service.
If users have a public profile, their posts would be accessible from other apps; if they have a private profile, they can approve users who want to interact with their content.
Developers can build new features and experiences that can plug into other open social networks due to the open social networking protocols.
Threads is Meta's first app envisioned to be compatible with an open social networking protocol, aiming to help people find their community, regardless of the app they use.
